Abstract

This study aims to explore the extent to which social-emotional learning (SEL) skills are included in the preparatory education curriculum (preschool) in Algeria, by analyzing the activities included in the curriculum and analyzing the theoretical foundations on which it is based. This is in view of the importance of social-emotional learning for pre-school children and its repercussions on their achievement and personal level in the stages of their schooling and post-schooling. If learning is young, such as engraving on stone, as well as building the social and emotional skills of the child from an early age, it makes him an individual who is able to adapt and integrate into his society, especially in light of the social and cultural transformations witnessed by today's societies due to technological development that led to the fading of borders and the invasion of cultures. Within the framework of achieving the objective of the study, the content analysis methodology was adopted, including a desk analysis of the official curriculum issued by the Algerian Ministry of National Education and the theoretical foundations of the curricula. The analysis revealed that there are initial trends towards integrating aspects of social-emotional learning skills in educational activities, such as promoting cooperation and respect for the other, but these aspects remain marginal and unsystematic, as the curriculum focuses mainly on traditional academic skills. The results also showed that the theoretical foundations of the curricula depend on international educational references, but they lack localization in accordance with Algerian cultural and social specificity. The study emphasizes the need to develop a national framework that clearly integrates social-emotional learning skills into curricula, while strengthening partnerships between educational institutions and the family to ensure balanced development of the child, and proposes further studies to measure the impact of experimental programs in this field.
