This article investigates the interplay between two influential strands in linguistic theory: one that conceptualizes language as a socially embedded structure shaped by historical and philosophical currents, and another that applies this conceptualization through empirical research grounded in social variables such as gender, class, and geography. It posits that while the social perspective on language emerged within a traditional intellectual context, it has been significantly refined through quantitative and analytical methodologies that facilitate the observation of linguistic phenomena in real-life social settings. Despite differences in theoretical orientations and methodological approaches, the article highlights a persistent epistemological continuity between both strands. The study aims to reassess the development of sociolinguistics by examining how theoretical and empirical approaches converge, without reducing one to the other.
