This paper investigates the rendering of Algerian cultural realia in the English translation of Ahlem Mosteghanemi’s Dhakirat al-Jassad, with particular emphasis on how cultural elements are mediated for an Anglophone readership. Adopting a comparative approach, the study examines selected instances of culture-specific items, including material culture, institutional terms, dialectal expressions, and proverbial language. Drawing on Davies’s (2003) framework of translation strategies, the analysis reveals that translators frequently negotiate between cultural preservation and reader accessibility through strategies such as preservation, globalization, and addition. The findings indicate that while these strategies facilitate comprehension, they often result in partial cultural dilution, especially in cases involving deeply embedded local references. The study also argues that a more nuanced translational approach, combining direct transfer with contextual explanation, can enhance the representation of Algerian cultural identity in English.
