Human Vs. Artificial Intelligence: Who Best Captures Tayeb Salih's Voice?

Authors : Ennebati Fatima Zohra .

Abstract

Abstract:This paper explores the challenges of translating Tayeb Salih’s Season of Migration to the North, comparing the performance of ChatGPT, DeepL, and the renowned translator Denys Johnson-Davies. Through the analysis of selected culturally rich and metaphorical excerpts, the research investigates how each translator handles figurative language, cultural references, and emotional tone drawing on Venuti’s model of foreignization and domestication in handling cultural elements in translation. Findings show that while ChatGPT demonstrates surprising accuracy and fluency that is often closer to human translation, DeepL struggles with cultural depth and literary nuances. However, human translation remains unmatched in conveying the subtle emotional and cultural layers of Salih’s voice. The study concludes that although AI is rapidly advancing, capturing the full literary and cultural essence of complex texts still requires human sensitivity, suggesting that a collaborative approach between AI and human translators is the most effective way forward in literary translation.
