This article examines the critical role of text selection in translation, arguing that translation is not merely a linguistic transfer but a culturally and ideologically situated practice. Focusing on Arabic-to-Western translations, it highlights how the choices of which texts to translate, promote, or canonize contribute to reproducing Orientalist stereotypes of the Arab-Muslim Other. The study shows that translation often functions as a discursive filter rather than a neutral bridge, influenced by institutional power, market logic, and historical legacies. Drawing on postcolonial theory, discourse analysis, and translation studies, the article positions text selection as a key site of ideological intervention and emphasizes the ethical responsibilities of translators, scholars, and cultural institutions in shaping cross-cultural representation.
