Bringing History To Life: Narrative Strategies And The Novelistic Transmission Of Reality In Norman Mailer’s The Armies Of The Night

Abstract
Abstract This article examines how Norman Mailer’s The Armies of the Night revitalizes historical events through experimental narrative strategies, illustrating the novel’s ability to merge factual accuracy with imaginative storytelling. Focusing on the 1967 March on the Pentagon, the study analyzes how Mailer employs self-reflexivity, polyphony, and genre hybridity to destabilize the boundary between documentary record and literary invention. The analysis draws upon classical and contemporary theories of historiography and narrative, including the contributions of Aristotle, Lukács, Auerbach, Bakhtin, White, and Hutcheon, together with more recent critical perspectives developed by Mosser, Rocha, Williams, and Ortiz. Adopting a qualitative, text-centered methodology grounded in close reading of Mailer’s narrative voice and rhetorical strategies, the study demonstrates that Mailer transforms history into a novelistic experience, dramatizing the Pentagon protest as both lived reality and literary construction. The findings underscore the capacity of historical fiction to imbue the past with ethical resonance, aesthetic power, and an openness to continual reinterpretation. ملخص تبحث هذه المقالة في كيفية إحياء رواية نورمان ميلر "جيوش الليل" للأحداث التاريخية من خلال استراتيجيات سردية تجريبية، مما يُظهر قدرة الرواية على دمج دقة الوقائع مع السرد الخيالي. بالتركيز على مسيرة البنتاغون عام ١٩٦٧، تُحلل الدراسة كيف يستخدم ميلر التأمل الذاتي، وتعدد الأصوات، وهجينة الأنواع الأدبية لزعزعة الحدود بين السجل الوثائقي والإبداع الأدبي. يستند التحليل إلى النظريات الكلاسيكية والمعاصرة في التأريخ والسرد، بما في ذلك مساهمات أرسطو، ولوكاش، وأورباخ، وباختين، ووايت، وهتشيون، بالإضافة إلى وجهات نظر نقدية أحدث طورها موسر، وروشا، وويليامز، وأورتيز. باتباع منهجية نوعية متمحورة حول النص، تستند إلى قراءة متأنية لأسلوب ميلر السردي واستراتيجياته البلاغية، تُظهر الدراسة أن ميلر يُحوّل التاريخ إلى تجربة روائية، مُصوّرًا احتجاج البنتاغون كواقع مُعاش وبناء أدبي. تُؤكد النتائج قدرة الخيال التاريخي على إضفاء صدى أخلاقي، وقوة جمالية، وانفتاح على إعادة التفسير المُستمرة على الماضي.
