The Politics Of Memory: How Nations Remember And Forget Historical Atrocities

Authors : Bekkai Selma . Frid Daoudi .

Abstract

The politics of memory is states' strategic manipulation of historical narratives to serve current political goals. This article investigates how various political regimes, including democracies and authoritarian states, use historical memory to strengthen power structures and establish political legitimacy. The concept of historical amnesia, or the deliberate forgetting of traumatic or divisive events, is examined for its impact on social cohesion and justice. Ignoring past atrocities has the potential to undermine genuine reconciliation and perpetuate violent cycles. Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) and educational initiatives are cited as ways to address historical injustices and promote national healing. This article also explores the role of cultural and social dynamics, such as ethnic, religious, and cultural identities, as well as the impact of international organisations and foreign policy on national memories. The study emphasises the importance of remembering and confronting historical atrocities to create more just and cohesive societies.
