This article aims to analyze the relationship between citizenship and identity security in contemporary societies from a sociological perspective by tracing the evolution of the concept of citizenship and its historical and intellectual transformations, while exploring its role in strengthening social cohesion and protecting national identity amid current global changes. The article is based on the assumption that citizenship is no longer limited to its legal dimension associated with rights and duties; rather, it has become a social, cultural, and political framework that contributes to building collective belonging and enhancing the sense of identity security within diverse and changing societies. The article also examines the impact of globalization, the digital revolution, and the growing phenomenon of cultural diversity on the reconfiguration of the concepts of citizenship and identity. It highlights that identity security has become closely linked to societies’ ability to strike a balance between preserving cultural specificities and embracing universal values, as well as between consolidating national unity and respecting social and cultural diversity. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of socialization institutions—particularly the family, school, media, and civil society—in promoting citizenship values and fostering social integration. In the Algerian context, the article addresses the specific relationship between citizenship and identity security in light of linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as rapid social and digital transformations. It argues that building an inclusive and comprehensive citizenship represents one of the most important strategic approaches to strengthening social stability, consolidating national identity, and transforming cultural diversity into a source of strength and integration rather than a factor of division and tension.
