Byzantine-latin Relations On The Eve Of The Crusades: A Historical Approach To Political And Ecclesiastical Transformations From Détente To Confrontation (1000-1095)

Authors : Brague Elghouini .

Abstract

This article examines the complex trajectory of relations between the Byzantine Empire and Latin Western Europe during the eleventh century, a period that witnessed a dramatic shift from relative coexistence to open ecclesial rupture and political confrontation. Through critical analysis of Latin and Greek sources, including the chronicles of Radulf Glaber, the correspondence of Pope Leo IX and Patriarch Michael Keroularios, and the Alexiad of Anna Komnene, this study argues that the deterioration of Byzantine-Latin relations resulted not from a single cataclysmic event such as the so-called "Great Schism" of 1054, but rather from the cumulative effect of intersecting political, ecclesiastical, and cultural factors. These included the Norman conquest of Byzantine Italy, competing ecclesiological visions of papal primacy versus pentarchic order, the radicalization of polemical discourse by figures such as Cardinal Humbert of Silva Candida, and the progressive erosion of the Byzantine ideological framework that imagined a unified Christian commonwealth under emperor and pope. The article concludes by examining how these pre-existing tensions shaped the problematic encounter between Emperor Alexios I Komnenos and the armies of the First Crusade, setting the stage for the mutual suspicion that would characterize subsequent crusading relations.
