Abstract: The philosophy of social responsibility is deeply ingrained in the necessity to integrate social and ethical considerations into the operational frameworks of businesses, paralleling the imperative to balance often-conflicting interests such as profitability, societal welfare, and consumer satisfaction. When small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) adopt this philosophy, they not only boost their own competitiveness but also enhance their operational performance, thereby positioning themselves as crucial agents in promoting sustainable development within their respective nations. Given the unique attributes of SMEs—including their limited resources, inherent flexibility, and intimate connections with customers and employees—these characteristics significantly shape their approaches to social responsibility. This paper endeavors to examine the role of social responsibility in SMEs, specifically focusing on its implications for sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on the context of Algeria
