This study investigates the impact of stereotype threat on athletes’ behavior and performance, with a specific focus on gender dynamics across both individual and team sports. Drawing from a sample of 44 junior athletes (handball and track & field), the research employs a mixed-method approach—including questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and field observations—to examine correlations between anxiety, performance decline, and coping strategies. The findings confirm a strong negative correlation between stereotype-induced anxiety and athletic performance (r = -0.973, p < 0.001), particularly in sports culturally dominated by one gender. Notably, athletes in individual sports exhibited greater vulnerability to stereotype threats compared to those in team environments, where social support structures mitigated negative effects. Additionally, the study identifies that psychological coping mechanisms—such as positive self-talk, emotional regulation, and social support—substantially buffer against performance deterioration (r = -0.914, p = 0.0002). The research underscores the urgent need for targeted psychological training and inclusive coaching strategies that foster resilience and reduce stereotype salience. It also contributes to the global discourse on gender equity in sports by highlighting the contextual and cultural variability in athletes’ responses to stereotype threat.
