Abstract: This study examines the trajectory of French colonialism in Algeria as a settler-colonial project that targeted land, people, and identity through policies of expropriation, institutional dismantling, and cultural and linguistic domination. This project was not merely a military invasion but an attempt to reshape the Algerian self in accordance with the French model. However, Algerian resistance—whether popular, political, intellectual, or military—embodied an existential rejection of colonialism, revolving around the central question of identity and memory. The study further shows that the concept of decolonization goes beyond the attainment of political independence to include dismantling both the material and symbolic colonial structures, reclaiming sovereignty over history, memory, and collective consciousness. In this context, thinkers such as Frantz Fanon and Malek Bennabi emphasized that liberation can only be achieved by freeing the mind from the image of the colonizer and overcoming receptiveness to colonization. The study also traces the process of reconstituting the Algerian self through Emir Abdelkader’s armed resistance, popular uprisings, the national movement, and ultimately the November 1954 Revolution, which restored the legitimacy of the national state. It highlights as well the significance of the massacres of May 8, 1945, as a crucible for the birth of national consciousness. Moreover, it explains that after independence, Algeria continued its project of dismantling colonial legacies through the Tripoli Charter (1962) and the Constitution of 1963, while restoring Algerian identity and historical memory by liberating public space. The study concludes that comprehensive liberation requires dismantling colonialism materially and symbolically, politically and culturally, to ensure the construction of a strong the Algerian entity.
