This article aims to examine the impact of digitalization on economic growth in Algeria over the period 1990-2020, using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. Several explanatory indicators were adopted to assess this impact, including the number of mobile phone subscribers as a proxy for digitalization, alongside investment and trade openness as traditional growth determinants. The empirical estimation results revealed the existence of a long-run relationship among the variables. Specifically, the number of mobile phone subscribers was found to have a negative impact on per capita GDP growth. This negative effect is attributed to the fact that digitalization in Algeria during the study period was not effectively directed toward productive sectors but was rather characterized by predominantly consumptive and entertainment-oriented use, in addition to the lack of adequate digital infrastructure and digital skills. On the other hand, both investment and trade openness showed a statistically significant and positive effect on economic growth, highlighting the crucial role these factors play in stimulating economic activity and enhancing productivity.
