Literary translation is a type of translation that inevitably involves rendering of culturally-specific items from the source text, and, by extension, source culture, into the target text, and, by extension, target culture. This situation may cause problems to the literary translator. Therefore, translation procedures have been suggested by researchers and translators to help the literary translator properly render the CSIs without prejudice to the message of the author; cultural borrowing and definition are two of these suggested translation procedures. Based on these grounds, this article sheds light on the importance of the procedures of cultural borrowing and definition in the process of translating, from/into Arabic/English, cultural items that seem untranslatable. The results showed that cultural borrowing and definition are chiefly important to avoid the untranslatability. However, they also showed that cultural borrowing was used in certain cases to add some foreignising features to the TL.
