This article explores hydrogen as a key driver of Algeria’s energy transition within its 2040 national roadmap. It underlines its potential to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors and support economic diversification beyond hydrocarbons. The analysis highlights Algeria’s structural advantages, including strong solar resources, existing infrastructure, and proximity to European markets. A phased development strategy learning, deployment, and industrialization is proposed. Regulatory, financial, and human capacity reforms are identified as essential conditions for success. Despite significant opportunities, cost, technology, and market uncertainties remain major challenges.
