Abstract

This study examines how children acquire various numerical formats—both symbolic (Arabic numerals, number words) and non-symbolic (quantities)—during the early primary school years (first through third grade). To test the proposed hypotheses and collect data, we conducted a field study using several instruments: Raven’s Progressive Matrices and four numerical tasks from the adapted Zareki battery, administered to a sample of 45 children. The study produced several important findings, including statistically significant differences between performance on numerical mapping and numerical decoding. Differences were also found across tasks involving the various numerical formats. These differences appear to be primarily explained by grade level, suggesting a motor-cognitive mechanism influenced by developmental stage.
