How Can I Say That I Am A Man If I Don't Smoke? A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Tobacco Addiction And The Construction Of Toxic & Cool Masculinities Among Young Algerian Adolescents

Authors : Babou Amina .

Abstract

The crux of this scrutiny is to explore to what extent addiction to nicotine or ‘’smoking’’ is associated with the construction of masculinity by Algerian adolescents. Boys often indulge themselves in smoking to negotiate and construct their masculinity which per se stipulates being powerful, tough and risk-taking. The study unveils smoking addictions by young students which tend to uphold the paradoxes between hegemonic masculinity and healthy masculinity. Smoking inter alia serves a means of fueling normative masculinity which is anti- authoritarian and boisterous, and transgressing dominant feminine constructions.
