The Loss And Cultural Reconstruction In A Context Of Modernization: An Analysis Of Ambiguous Adventure By Cheikh Hamidou Kane

Authors : Keita Diby .

Abstract

This study examines The Loss and Cultural Reconstruction in a Context of Modernization through Cheikh Hamidou Kane’s novel Ambiguous Adventure, which portrays the conflict between African traditional values and Western modernity. The research problem centers on how modernization and colonial education contribute to the erosion of cultural identity while simultaneously opening possibilities for renewal. The main objective of the study is to analyze how Kane presents the spiritual and intellectual struggle of the protagonist, Samba Diallo, as a metaphor for the broader dilemma of postcolonial African societies torn between preserving tradition and embracing modernity. The study is grounded in a postcolonial theoretical framework, drawing on concepts from Frantz Fanon and Homi Bhabha concerning identity, hybridity, and cultural negotiation. Methodologically, it employs a qualitative textual analysis focusing on themes, character development, and symbolism. The findings reveal that the loss of cultural roots, while painful, can lead to self-reflection and the reconstruction of a renewed cultural consciousness. The study concludes by recommending a more integrative approach to education and culture one that reconciles African spiritual heritage with the intellectual contributions of modernity to build a balanced and resilient identity.
