The End Is Coming And We Know It: Reading Post-apocalypse In The Maze Runner

Authors : Maafa Sofiane .

Abstract

Post-apocalyptic fiction is one of the most controversial subjects of modern times. It predicts the end of the world as we know it today; offering insights on how it might end. Post-apocalyptic fiction is not only concerned with the possible end of the modern world, but also it offers a trajectory of how it would continue in case the end takes place. Studies show that why post-apocalyptic fiction is proliferating is probably due to the traumatic universal culture the world is living today. There is no way the world should continue the way it does, these studies continue to argue. The present article will be divided into two parts: the first part will be concerned with the fact that the world is definitely collapsing in terms of morals, ecology and resources; ultimately it will come to an end. The second part that the present article will be dealing with is the depiction of a post-apocalyptic world that we might just witness in the future; and that is according to James Dashner in his novel The Maze Runner (2009). The present article adopts a combination of critical theory as well as close-reading methodology of the target texts.
