Domestic Monsters: The Subversive Identity Of The Countryside In American Gothic Narrative

Authors : Maafa Sofiane .

Abstract

American Gothic literature departs from its European roots by offering a distinctive and often sinister image of the countryside. European Gothic usually centers on ancient castles that are falling apart. Meanwhile, American Gothic shifts the idyllic image of the countryside from a heavenly place into a place harboring frustration, moral decadence, and unearthly terrors. This paper investigates how American Gothic literature changes rural settings into hubs infested with horror and supernatural activities, thus disclosing the deeply rooted social anxieties often linked with trauma, isolation, and the total failure of the moral system. This paper applies a close-reading methodology of selected texts, ultimately revealing how the seemingly heavenly countryside can be a source of disturbing natures.
