This article explores how the international legal personality of international organizations has evolved over time. Initially, collective efforts between states were limited to informal unions, commissions, and conferences that lacked a distinct legal identity. The article traces this progression from early European alliances to the establishment of the League of Nations, which, despite being the first global organization, was not recognized as having full legal personality. The pivotal change occurred after World War II, with the creation of the United Nations. The advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in 1949 confirmed the UN’s juridical status, marking a significant step in international law. The paper emphasizes that international organizations, although distinct from sovereign states, have limited functional legal personality.
