Diglossia, Bilingualism, And Language Planning In Algeria: Implications For The Use And Prestige Of Modern Standard Arabi

Authors : Sadoudi Saida .

Abstract

Abstract: Language is an essential component in constructing human thought and a primary means of communication and expression of a society’s cultural and scientific development. Since the revelation of the Quran, Arabic has been an active element in unifying the Islamic ummah and preserving its civilizational identity. However, colonial conditions experienced by Algeria contributed to diminishing its prominence and weakening its role in favor of foreign languages, especially French, giving rise to the phenomenon of linguistic duality that has been exacerbated by globalization and the spread of modern communication media. This has affected the structure of the Arabic language and its position within society. The aim of this research is to analyze the manifestations of linguistic duality in Algeria and to trace its reflections on the use of Modern Standard Arabic in various aspects of life, while seeking to understand its relation to the cultural identity of Algerian society. The study finds that this duality has led to the decline of Arabic vis-à-vis French in education, administration, and media, contributing to a fragmentation of linguistic harmony within Algerian society and weakening Arabic’s capacity to perform its communicative and cognitive functions. Results also show that the spread of digital media has given rise to hybrid linguistic patterns that threaten the purity and integrity of Modern Standard Arabic. The study thus underscores the necessity of adopting a clear language policy that revalues Arabic and strengthens its presence in scientific and technological domains, thereby ensuring the preservation of national identity and the civilizational heritage of the Algerian nation. Keywords: Arabic language, linguistic duality, Algerian linguistic reality, bilingualism, cultural identity, globalization.
