Abstract: In Algerian society, the given name extends far beyond its identificatory function, constituting a dense social marker shaped by symbolic, cultural, and ideological values. This sociolinguistic study investigates the mechanisms through which the onomastic imaginary, understood as the set of collective representations associated with given names, contributes to the production of symbolic hierarchies and processes of social distinction. The central hypothesis argues that the choice and social reception of given names reveal underlying structural tensions between cultural heritage and aspirations toward modernity in contemporary Algerian society. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining a questionnaire survey administered to 150 participants in Algiers with a thematic content analysis of the collected discourses. The research is situated within the theoretical frameworks of Social Representation Theory (Moscovici, 1961) and interactional sociolinguistics (Gumperz, 1982). The findings highlight differentiated processes of pronominal valorization and stigmatization, confirming that naming constitutes an indexical social act through which identity transformations and symbolic power relations in Algeria are expressed and negotiated.
