Neonatal Jaundice: A Series of 100 Cases in a Pediatrics Department, Annaba University Hospital, Algeria Abstract Background: Neonatal jaundice is a common cause of hospitalization and may be associated with significant morbidity and mortality in low-resource settings. This study aimed to determine the frequency, as well as the epidemiological, clinical, and etiological characteristics of neonatal jaundice in a pediatric department in Algeria. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from September 2023 to February 2024 at the pediatric department of Annaba University Hospital. All neonates aged 0–28 days admitted with mucocutaneous jaundice were included. Diagnosis was based on clinical examination and total serum bilirubin levels interpreted according to the 2004 American Academy of Pediatrics nomograms. Results: Among 334 hospitalized neonates, 101 presented with jaundice, corresponding to a hospital incidence of 30.2%. After exclusion of one incomplete record, 100 cases were analyzed. Male predominance was observed (sex ratio =1.43). Early-onset jaundice (<24 hours) occurred in 30% of cases. The main etiologies were feto-maternal incompatibilities (45%), mainly ABO incompatibilities, which were significantly associated with early jaundice (p < 0.01), followed by neonatal infections (38%). Intensive phototherapy was administered in 80% of cases, with no need for exchange transfusion. Outcomes were favorable in 95% of neonates. Conclusion: Neonatal jaundice remains a frequent cause of hospitalization, mainly related to fetomaternal incompatibilities and infections. Early detection and access to standardized phototherapy protocols are essential to prevent neurological complications.
