Abstract

The present study explores master 1 students’ self-perceived application of critical reading strategies. it aims to investigate the extent to which students apply critical reading strategies, drawing on their personal academic experiences. Data were collected from 30 students using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire, and were coded and analysed using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS, version 27). The analysis revealed that while students showed relevance on lower-order thinking strategies, such as understanding vocabulary or identifying main ideas, they faced challenges in employing higher order thinking strategies in reading such as analysis, synthesis, inference and evaluation. The findings suggested that their difficulties stemmed from a lack of awareness and explicit training in critical reading. In addition, the research also uncovered the strategies that were least frequently employed, providing insights into the areas that needed pedagogical reinforcement. The study emphasizes the need for implementing critical reading instruction into EFL curriculum and calls for teacher training programs to support the development of learners’ critical reading abilities..
