Abstract: Contemporary novels from the Global South largely seek to embody the concept of alterity and the recognition of a world rooted in tolerance and cooperation. They aim to foster coexistence and mutual respect as a truthful reflection of human reality across successive civilizations since antiquity. This stands in contrast to the notion of a fixed identity—an artificial construct that claims identities are final and denies historical accumulation as a result of human interaction. Such identities have been transformed by historical contexts into seemingly inescapable truths due to specific circumstances. Accordingly, the contemporary novel tends to highlight points of convergence among different peoples through shared human values related to life, destiny, and ethics, viewing these as universal and divinely ordained. It also seeks to limit the dominance of rigid identities that exclude others, with the goal of achieving a more tolerant, harmonious world—a goal toward which societies, in all their diversity, continually aspire and upon which contemporary life is founded. European literature produced in Algeria, starting with Louis Bertrand—considered the father of the colonial novel—established an entire literary tradition based on the idea of conquest: the conquest of one identity by another, replacing it without considering what unites them. This identity imagines itself as original and complete. In this sense revolves Albert Camus’s The Stranger (1942), where the protagonist Meursault embodies a closed, self-centered subjectivity that negates the Other, considering itself superior to Algerians, the true people of the land. The novel simultaneously expresses a clash between two identities and constructs its narrative by negating the existence of Algerians, articulating the essence of a colonial ideology that seeks to replace an authentic Algerian population with a European one, privileging what it imagines to be a deeply rooted French-European identity. The novel “The Clash of Civilizations Around the Elevator of Piazza Vittorio” by the Algerian writer “Amara Lakhous” is a response to the novel “The Stranger,” aiming to disrupt its structure and explode its biases in order to reveal the existence of a world of coexistence and dialogue between different societies in our world .
