This study sheds light on the difficulties that hinder children with ASD from accessing the lexicon during verbal communication due to cognitive troubles. Such issue results in difficult retrieval of words and of their semantic images, and in a low receptive and productive linguistic balance, leading to deficits in comprehension and oral production. In addition, the study focuses on the access to the mental lexicon and on its role in receptive and productive language production and growth. In so doing, we discuss different concepts, definitions, and models that interpret the mental lexicon and access to it.
