Irregular Migration From The African Sahel And Its Implications On The Mediterranean Host Countries

Authors : Birem Fatima .

Abstract

The article examines irregular migration phenomenon from the African Sahel region to the Mediterranean basin, focusing on its causes and implications. It highlights the phenomenon’s complex, multidimensional nature, often linked to terrorism, organized crime, and human trafficking, which has led host countries to treat it as a security issue. These movements affect national security across economic, social, cultural, and political dimensions. The study concludes that addressing irregular migration requires coordinated, long-term strategies between host countries and countries of origin, based on international cooperation, social justice, and respect for human dignity, rather than relying on temporary security measures.
