Abstract: This article focuses on the significance of cultural awareness in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms and its role in developing global competence among students. It highlights that mastery in cross-cultural communication is crucial in the context of rapid globalization. The study utilizes an extensive literature review and questionnaire feedback from 50 third-year EFL students at Amar Thelidji University during the academic year 2023-2024 to examine current practices and attitudes towards integrating cultural content in language education. Findings indicate that while students recognize the importance of cultural knowledge for enhancing communication skills and global awareness, EFL instruction could benefit from more interactive and engaging methods. The paper points out a gap between the recognition of cultural learning's value and the instructional approaches employed. Recommendations for EFL educators include incorporating greater cultural diversity, leveraging technology to enhance lesson engagement, and providing more opportunities for genuine cross-cultural interactions. This research contributes to the broader dialogue on preparing foreign language students for intercultural communication and global challenges by advocating for a comprehensive approach that centers cultural awareness in language teaching.
Key words: culture - awareness – communication – globalization - EFL classrooms.
