Assessing The Impact Of The Knowledge Economy On Sustainable Development : Evidence From Southeast Asian Countries.

Authors : Kaci Said .

Abstract

This study assesses the contribution of the knowledge economy to sustainable development in Southeast Asian economies. Covering Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam from 1990 to 2024, the analysis evaluates the effects of human capital, R&D expenditures, resident patent applications, and GDP on Adjusted Net Savings (ANS), with using a dynamic panel model estimated (GMM). The results show that human capital, R&D investment, and resident patenting significantly enhance ANS, underscoring the pivotal role of intangible assets in sustaining long-term development. Conversely, GDP exerts a positive yet statistically insignificant effect, indicating that economic growth alone, when not coupled with human and technology-oriented capacity building, fails to strengthen sustainability. Overall, the study demonstrates that sustainability in these emerging Asian economies is driven primarily by advancements in human and technological capabilities. The findings emphasize the need for policies that prioritize education, research, innovation, and knowledge diffusion to support the transition toward a sustainable development trajectory.
