When Society Becomes Ill: Toward A Psychosocial Understanding Of Social Disorder

Authors : Merazga Batoul .

Abstract

This article rethinks the notion of disorder by shifting the lens from the individual to society itself. Drawing on psychoanalysis, systems theory, social identity theory, and cognitive theory, it argues that social dysfunction arises when collective values, norms, and symbolic systems lose coherence. Distorted beliefs, moral ambiguity, and fragmented identities reflect not only personal struggles but a deeper imbalance within the social fabric. Using Algerian society as a reflective context, the paper explores how culture, religion, and collective narratives can both stabilize and destabilize identity. It highlights how concepts such as love, success, freedom, and morality become distorted under conditions of rapid change, leading to alienation and instability. Rather than treating disorder as individual pathology, the article proposes an integrative psychosocial framework for understanding social disorder as a collective condition that requires rethinking normality, strengthening critical reflection, and fostering cultural resilience.
