The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is one of the strategic tools adopted to promote development and human rights on the African continent, through its contribution to consolidating the principles of good governance, the rule of law and strengthening transparency and accountability. Despite the progress made by the initiative in institutional strengthening and promoting international partnerships, its effectiveness remains limited by a set of structural and methodological challenges, stemming mainly from weak political will on the part of some Member States, a lack of available resources and the impact of external interventions on the independence of African decision-making. However, this initiative represents a qualitative step towards integrating human rights into the continental development agenda, and in order to ensure sustainable results with a tangible impact, a complete reassessment of its strategies and the activation of monitoring and evaluation mechanisms are necessary to guarantee the effectiveness of its implementation.
