Abstract

This study aims to investigate novice translators' perceptions of translation quality during the initial transition phase from university training to professional practice in the Algerian market. It adopts an exploratory design combining a questionnaire for trainees and new recruits with semi-structured interviews with professionals involved in supervising professional integration. The descriptive and thematic analysis of the data points to three main themes: the predominance of linguistic accuracy as an assessment criterion in the academic context; a gap in readiness that calls for clearer mechanisms for assessing and refining competence; and a shift in the perception of quality after integrating into the labour market to include client requirements and workflow. The study finds that quality standards and academic assessment mechanisms need to be aligned with market needs through valid and measurable criteria and authentic assessment tasks that explicitly reflect professional constraints.
