Abstract Genetic epistemology, as developed by Jean Piaget, represents a scientific endeavor to understand how human knowledge originates and evolves. Piaget sought to establish the study of knowledge as an independent science that unites philosophy and experimental psychology. He believed that knowledge is not given in a ready-made form but is constructed progressively through the individual’s interaction with the environment, by means of assimilation and accommodation, which aim to maintain balance between the self and the external world. Inspired by Kant’s philosophy and Darwin’s theory of evolution, Piaget linked cognitive development to biological adaptation. He identified four stages of cognitive growth: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational, marking the transition from sensory perception to logical reasoning. The importance of genetic epistemology lies in its ability to connect the evolution of individual thought with the historical development of scientific knowledge. It promotes a constructivist view that sees humans as active agents in producing knowledge rather than passive recipients. Despite the criticisms directed at it, Piaget’s theory remains one of the most significant intellectual contributions blending philosophical insight, psychological analysis, and scientific history to explain the evolution of human knowledge.
