This paper seeks to elucidate effective strategies for fostering communicative and cultural competence within the Algerian educational context. It does so by examining how politeness is represented in the dialogues of elementary school reading textbooks, and to what extent these representations contribute to the development of such competencies. Drawing on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, the analysis reveals that politeness principles are predominantly conveyed as prescriptive instructions rather than being embedded within interactive, communicative tasks. The study argues for the pedagogical integration of linguistic politeness as a means of cultivating functional cultural communicative competence and enhancing learners’ cultural awareness in meaningful and practical ways.
