Authors : Tedjani Mohammed Elhafed . Keddi Abdelmadjid .

Abstract

This paper explores the Lean Banking role in improving Islamic banking service quality amid the Digital Revolution; it traces the evolution of Lean thinking from industry to Islamic financial services. A conceptual model is proposed, integrating Lean tools with Sharia compliance and digital innovation. Digitization is shown to combat inefficiencies like redundancy and slow processes in Islamic banks. Al Salam Bank Algeria serves as a case study, applying Lean through AI, RPA, and performance reengineering. Empirical findings reveal a specific type of inefficiency "Sharia waste" from non-compliance in contracts. Three main sources of waste are identified: rigid administrative culture, weak training, and tech–Sharia disconnect. The study confirms that quality and efficiency in Islamic banks require Sharia-focused operational reform since Lean principles alone are insufficient without Sharia governance integration and skill development. The paper advocates for a responsive, ethical, and digitally empowered Islamic banking model.
