Request-response Strategies Used By Algerian And Jordanian Phd Students

Authors : Benbouya Amel .

Abstract

The present study aims at investigating the request-response strategies in both Algerian Spoken Arabic (ASA) and Jordanian Spoken Arabic (JSA). The participants of the study are 48 PhD students. To collect data, a Discourse Completion Task (DCT), consisting of eight scenarios, is used in the present study. The collected data are analyzed based on a modified version of the request-response strategies adopted by Schunk (1983). The results reveal several similarities and differences between Algerians and Jordanians in their use of the request-response strategies in both formal and informal situations. Moreover, the findings indicate that there are no significant cultural differences between the two groups. The study reveals a cultural similarity regarding the two groups who are influenced by the religious factor “swearing” when responding to requests. In this cultural respect, the only difference observed between Algerians and Jordanians is in their pronunciation which is due to dialectal differences.
