This exploratory study aims to investigate Algerian Master’s students’ strategies and techniques used to prepare for the PhD contest. The objective of this study is to, firstly, explore their preparation approaches and, secondly, to provide recommendations based on related literature. Relevant data were gathered relying on a questionnaire that was made in google drive forms and posted on Facebook groups dedicated to Algerian Master students having sat, or willing to sit, for the PhD contest. The researcher managed to reach 118 Master students from different Algerian universities to answer the questionnaire. The areas of focus are gender differences, timing of preparation, study intensity, approaches adopted, level of stress, and academic achievement. According to the results, it was found that the students who started the preparation more than 2 months before the contest and spent more than 5 hours per day on preparation had higher levels of confidence. 61% of students relied only on theory (collecting information and revising it). As to other factors, high stress level was characterized by 58 % of the respondents due to fear of failure, time deficiency and lack of resources which influenced their outcome. A strong correlation between the performance of the Master’s students in their previous educational career and their results during the PhD contest was observed, where high performing students tended to use a more structured approach. As future research is concerned, extended effects of preparation strategies on learners’ performance should be analysed, and possibilities of intervention should be taken into account.
