Algeria, a multilingual country with a diverse sociolinguistic profile, is undergoing a significant transition in language education, with English emerging as a dominant medium of instruction in higher education. This paper investigates the increasing use of English for drafting and publishing research papers among non-EFL PhD candidates. It examines the advantages of this shift, identifies the inherent challenges, and suggests strategies to support candidates in developing their academic writing skills. Through a mixed-methods approach involving a nationwide online questionnaire, the study explores the needs of non-EFL PhD candidates and provides insights into fostering their linguistic and methodological competencies. The findings offer actionable recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Algeria’s higher education system.
