This article explores the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and international humanitarian law (IHL), highlighting the legal and ethical issues raised by AI in conflict situations. As armed forces increasingly utilize AI technologies, including self-operating drones and decision-making algorithms, grasping IHL principles becomes essential. The article examines current legal structures, pinpointing gaps and ambiguities in applying conventional IHL principles such as distinction and proportionality to AI technologies. It also tackles ethical issues, especially related to accountability for misconduct or unintended damage resulting from autonomous weapons. The ethical responsibility of human operators and possible biases in algorithms are explored in more detail. Considering these challenges, the article provides policy suggestions to guarantee AI systems align with IHL while promoting innovation, achieving both compliance with the law and progress in technology
