Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between maladaptive cognitive schemas and addiction to social media. The researcher used a descriptive method, and the study included 125 university students (91 females, 34 males), selected through incidental sampling (non-random incidental sample). The Social Media Addiction Scale by researchers Tichabet & Anoofli (2021), consisting of 45 items across five dimensions, was used to achieve the objective. Additionally, the Short Form of the Young Schema Questionnaire (SF-YSQ) by Jeffrey Young (Young et al, 2003) was utilised. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS program. The results indicated that the "domain of disconnection and rejection" is the schema domain most associated with social media addiction behavior, followed by the domain of impaired autonomy and performance, then the domain of excessive vigilance and inhibition, then the domain of insufficient self-control, and finally the domain of other-directedness. The study also pointed to a strong positive relationship between schema activation and social media addiction. The schemas of entitlement/grandiosity and unrelenting standards/hypercriticalness ranked first in the hierarchy of schemas. Additionally, there were no statistically significant differences on the social media addiction scale among university students based on age.
