Abstract

This study aimed to examine the level of cognitive dissonance and neurotic perfectionism among third-year psychology students at Batna 1 University (Algeria) and to explore the relationship between the two constructs. A descriptive approach was applied to a stratified random sample of 132 female students. Instruments included the Cognitive Dissonance Scale (Hassanein, 2017) and the Neurotic Perfectionism Scale (El-Quraiti et al., 2015). Results indicated a moderate level of cognitive dissonance and a low degree of neurotic perfectionism. No significant differences were found by specialization. However, a statistically significant positive correlation was observed between cognitive dissonance and neurotic perfectionism (r = 0.685, p < .01**). These findings highlight the relevance of cognitive dissonance theory in understanding maladaptive perfectionism among university students, suggesting the need for counselling interventions that address irrational beliefs and self-critical tendencies.
