Dysfunctional Adaptation Patterns And Their Relation To Criminal Recidivism Risk In Prisoners

Authors : Kerbal Mokhtar . Djellouli Zineb .

Abstract

This study examined maladaptive coping patterns and their relationship with the risk of criminal recidivism among incarcerated individuals. A descriptive–analytical design was adopted using two instruments: the Maladaptive Coping Patterns Questionnaire and the Historical-Clinical-Risk Management-20 (HCR-20) based Recidivism Risk Scale. The sample consisted of 20 male prisoners aged between 20 and 55 years. Results indicated a weak positive correlation between overall maladaptive coping patterns and recidivism risk. However, none of the individual coping dimensions (submissive, avoidant, or compensatory) emerged as significant predictors of recidivism risk. These findings suggest that maladaptive coping may function as a general vulnerability factor rather than a specific predictive determinant of reoffending.
