This study investigates the adverse effects of trade liberalization on the Algerian economy, with particular focus on the mounting pressures associated with import flows. Employing a statistical analysis of foreign trade indicators over the period 1990–2023, the research highlights the importance of adopting an import-substitution industrialization policy to alleviate the country's import burden. The findings reveal a significant vulnerability of the Algerian economy to external trade shocks, driven by the highly diversified and consistently high volume of imports, which have exerted a downward pressure on GDP. Moreover, the persistent trade deficit further impedes economic development, underscoring the need for a more robust domestic industrial base. In particular, the study advocates for the local production of widely consumed goods as a critical step toward enhancing economic resilience and sustainability.
