Abstract: This study examines how multilingualism in contemporary Algerian visual arts functions as an active aesthetic element expressing cultural identity within a postcolonial framework. Since Algeria’s independence in 1962, the colonial linguistic legacy represented by Arabic, French, and Amazigh has produced persistent semiotic and aesthetic tensions in artistic practices. The analysis focuses on three major works: Zineb Sedira’s Mother Tongue (2002), Kader Attia’s The Repair from Occident to Extra-Occidental Cultures (2012), and Lydia Ourahmane’s Tassili (2022). The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach combining visual semiotics, aesthetic critique, and postcolonial interpretation, with emphasis on concepts of cultural hybridity, the third space, and the relationship between text and image in visual discourse. The findings demonstrate that multilingual éléments such as written texts, subtitles, and sound layers extend beyond communicative functions to generate aesthetic tensions reflecting hybrid identity, resistance, and the fragmentation of colonial memory. Language thus becomes a visual and symbolic component integrated into the artwork’s aesthetic structure. The study highlights multilingualism as a creative strategy through which contemporary Algerian artists negotiate identity, memory, and cultural belonging within a postcolonial landscape, contributing to broader discussions in Arab aesthetics and opening avenues for future research on linguistic–visual intersections.
