This study aims to explore the multidimensional relationship between sleep quality and athletic performance by analyzing the physiological, neurological, and psychological factors that explain the impact of sleep on physical and skill‑based abilities, relying on a systematic analysis and critical review methodology and drawing upon the latest evidence derived from meta‑analyses and randomized controlled trials. The study found that sleep deprivation negatively affects various components of athletic performance, with a notable increase in the rate of perceived exertion. The results also showed that partial sleep deprivation in the early part of the night affects anaerobic and explosive capacities, while deprivation in the latter part affects motor control. The study concludes that improving sleep quality through sleep hygiene strategies and sleep extension constitutes an effective approach to enhancing athletic performance and reducing injury risks.
