Translating Sports Terminology: Human Expertise Versus Artificial Intelligence In The English–arabic Context

Authors : Ikhlef Zoulikha . Cheref Abdelkader .

Abstract

This study examines the translation of English sports terminology into Arabic by comparing human expertise with NMT and LLMs. It analyses five categories: technical and tactical terms, culture-specific expressions, metaphors, idioms, and proper names and acronyms. A comparative descriptive approach is used to evaluate Google Translate, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini against human translations. The analysis focuses on accuracy, contextual and cultural equivalence, fluency, register, and figurative language. The findings show that human translation achieves greater accuracy and contextual sensitivity, while AI performs effectively in standardized contexts. The study concludes that AI should primarily serve as a supportive tool within human-in-the-loop translation workflows.
