Authors : Omari Aicha .

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of maternal psychological stress and behavioral problems among their school-aged children—a field study in the city of Aflou. It also sought to identify differences in psychological stress based on educational level and marital status, as well as to explore the relationship between psychological stress and the variables of maternal age and the number of children. Furthermore, the study aimed to examine differences in behavioral problems according to the children's gender and educational level. To achieve these objectives, two instruments were utilized: the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) developed by Levenstein et al. (1993), consisting of 30 items, and the Behavioral Problems Scale by Hartani (2014), which comprises 64 items distributed across 5 dimensions. Adopting a descriptive research design appropriate for this study, data were collected from a sample of 57 mothers and 57 of their school-aged children. The collected data were statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, Version 22). The findings of the study indicated the following: The prevalence of both maternal psychological stress and children's behavioral problems was moderate. There were no statistically significant differences in psychological stress attributable to the mothers' marital status or educational level. There was no statistically significant correlation between psychological stress and either maternal age or the number of children. There was no statistically significant correlation between behavioral problems and the children's age. There were no statistically significant differences in behavioral problems based on gender or educational level. The study concludes with a set of recommendations and suggestions based on these findings.
