The Challenge Of Conveying Cultural Identity In The Translation Of Contemporary Algerian Literature

Authors : Chenni Fairouz .

Abstract

This paper examines the multifaceted challenge of conveying cultural identity in the translation and recording of contemporary Algerian literature. Situated at the intersection of Arabic, Berber, and French cultural traditions, modern Algerian literary production presents translators with a uniquely complex set of problems: linguistic registers, untranslatable cultural references, colonial and post-colonial history, and the nature of national identity itself. Through close readings of major Algerian writers. This paper analyzes the aesthetic and ideological dimensions of their work, before turning to the theoretical problems. The paper argues that translating literature demands not merely linguistic competence but a deep engagement with the civilizational complexity that defines Algerian identity. The conclusion proposes a framework for culturally sensitive translation practice that honors both the source culture and the expectations of the target audience.
