Abstract: The study aims to analyze the significance of activating the combined-contract approach as a Sharia-compliant hedging mechanism adopted by Islamic banks when financing high-risk start-ups. This approach is considered a method capable of balancing risk management requirements with adherence to Islamic legal principles. The study employs a descriptive–analytical methodology by examining the Sharia foundations of hedging, reviewing the jurisprudential rules governing the combination of contracts, and analyzing the most widely used practical tools in this context, such as the combination of murābaḥah and partnership, ijārah and partnership, down-payment sales (ʿarbūn), option-to-rescind clauses (khiyār al-sharṭ), and third-party guarantees. The study also provides a detailed classification of the risks faced by start-up enterprises and links each type of risk to its most suitable hedging instrument. The findings indicate that start-ups are exposed to a wide range of risks, and that hedging tools based on combining two contracts have—at least theoretically—proven effective in mitigating these risks while enhancing Sharia compliance. The results further reveal that employing such mechanisms enables Islamic banks to strengthen capital protection and ensure financing sustainability. The study recommends developing regulatory frameworks that support these practices, enhancing the training of Islamic banking professionals, and promoting financial innovation to facilitate the practical implementation of combined-contract hedging tools.
